The Lighting Of Goodhue Boulevard

On December 24th, 2011, NSNA members and Near South neighbors served the community placing luminarias on Goodhue Boulevard from “A” Street to the Capitol
Building. The lighting was organized by Carmen Maurer, Section 6 Representative.

The beauty of the Near South was certainly enhanced when all of the luminarias graced the Blvd. We would like to thank everyone who helped us on Christmas Eve!

2011 Pride Grants

PRIDE grants help homes and neighborhoods look good by providing up to $600 for limited exterior residential improvements in 13 participating neighborhoods: Clinton, Downtown, East Campus, Everett, Hartley, Havelock, Hawley/Malone, Irvingdale, Near South, North Bottoms, South Salt Creek, Univer-sity Place and Woods Park.

Applications for PRIDE grants are available beginning March 1, 2011 and funds are divided equally among the thirteen neighborhoods. Any funds remaining on May 1, 2011 will be distributed on a first come first-served basis. Annual income cannot exceed 80% of Lin-coln median income and is based on size of household.
PRIDE grants are for materials only and not for labor or equipment expenses. To be reimbursed, improvements need to be pre-approved by Urban Development staff, completed, and receipts submitted for all materials used. Painting (including related exterior repair) is PRIDE’S first priority. Other improvements can be funded if painting is included or not needed. For more information about housing rehabilita-tion and home ownership programs, call 441-7864.

Bike Racing

The top racing cyclists in the Midwest will converge on the Near South May 21st for the Capitol Criterium races as part of the 2011 Biketacular, and you can be part of the excitement. Bike races are staged in categories to ensure that racers of similar experience and ability compete against each other. Beginner’s categories (Cat 5 for men and Cat 4 for women) will be offered as they are in all sanctioned races. All you need is a bike, a helmet, $10 for a 1-day racing license (which covers the cost of insurance) and a spirit of adventure. Certified officials from USA Cycling will be on hand to answer questions and provide assistance. So come on down, pin on a race number and try something new!
