Remembering Jerre Brammeier

The following message was composed by NSNA Secretary Cathy Wilkin and shared with the NSNA Board on May 30:

It is with great sadness that we notify you of the passing of former board member and longtime Near South resident, Jerre Brammeier (85). She died quietly the evening of May 29 surrounded by family. Her daughter-in-law, Cynthia, was also on the board for many years. Jerre's son and Cynthia's husband, Matt, is well known for his carpentry/repair talents specific to our old homes. Their contributions cannot be understated. We had many NS meetings at their dining room table. I always admired the Victorian surroundings, appetizers served on beautiful platters, varieties of beverages available, candles burning, fragrant flowers nearby - Jerre always at the ready - hostess extraordinaire. A former teacher, Jerre had decorations galore so whatever the occasion, the appropriate decor was displayed for all to enjoy. For many years Jerre supplied the table decorations for our annual meetings. Some of her greatest contributions were her ability to conduct a meeting so we could get right to the point with not a minute wasted. She chaired the Private Property committee working with owners, landlords and city officials. She cared deeply about our historic neighborhood and I can't help but think her soul lingered a bit, not wanting to depart from her beautiful Queen Anne home on the hill. 1937 F St. has been the hallmark of our Tour of Homes for many years.

Personally I reflect on how we were birds of a feather in our collecting habits. I was never surprised to run into Jerre at a garage or estate sale. We would laugh and agree we didn't need one more thing, but we couldn't help ourselves. "Just looking" we'd say and laugh at the silliness, knowing we'd bring that one more thing home to try to squeeze onto a shelf.

God Bless You Jerre, for all you did, and for the elegant example of comportment, hard work and dedication you were to me and many others. You were truly a woman of substance.

- Cathy Wilken
